In Ontario the adult European earwig is about 5/8 inch (16mm) long and contrary to superstition this insect does not crawl into the human ear while you sleep. Earwigs are nocturnal and hide during the day in moist cracks and crevices. They are mainly scavengers but do occasionally feed on plants or anything else they can find such as lichen, pollen, other arthropods, or household pantry items. Once they enter a dwelling they can be found almost anywhere, although they do prefer a moister environment. They will not breed indoors.
Harm and Damage:
The biggest issue with earwigs is they can sometimes be found in relatively large numbers seeking shelter in and around homes, making them a common household pest. They do cause damage to flower and vegetable gardens, however the damage is usually minimal.
