The house mouse is a small rodent with large ears. It is about 5-7 inches (13-18cm) long including the 3-4 inch (5-7.5cm) tail and weighs approximately 1/2 ounce (15g). They can live up to 1 year and the female can have 5-10 litters per year with approximately 5-6 young per litter. They prefer to eat cereal grains but will sample many different food stuffs. They are tremendous climbers and are able to get through openings as small as 1/4 inch (6mm) across. The deer mouse is larger than the house mouse and is usually brown and white. It does invade homes in the fall but not to the degree of the house mouse. Control measures are similar.
Harm and Damage:
Mice can be destructive to structures through their gnawing. Like rats, they will gnaw on electrical wiring creating a possible fire hazard. Mice through their urine, droppings and hair can contaminate food causing illnesses. The deer mouse has become of particular concern as they can, through their droppings, spread hantaviris which can be fatal to humans.
